The 65-year-old Humberto Brenes, who is also widely known under the nickname “The Shark”, has been announced as one of the ten finalists for the Poker Hall of Fame. Brenes is a professional poker player who originates from Costa Rica, but his current place of residence is in Florida.
The Costa Rican started his gambling career at the baccarat table, and realised his liking to poker later. He started to appear at some tournaments in 1974, but it was not until 1988 he became a regular player in poker tournaments. Also, this was the year when Brenes first made it to the final table of a Main Event from the World Series of Poker (WSOP). He even got the fourth place and took home prize of $83,050.
Over the years, Humberto Brenes has collected two WSOP bracelets. He has also cashed 72 times at the tournament events over the years and made it to a total of three World Poker Tour (WPT) final tables.
Apart from his performances in various poker events, the player is also widely known for his cheerful and outgoing personality. Although he is always friendly to his opponents, “The Shark” could be very dangerous when things get serious. He has been ranked on fourth place on the all-time World Series of Poker cashes list, making a total of 86 in-the-money finishes.
All this has made the Costa Rican one of the most consistent poker players on a global scale over the last two decades and a half. Brenes’ all-time tournament earnings amount to $6 million. He is also a member of Team PokerStars and is considered one of the players who have played a crucial part in developing he poker game and making it more attractive on the territory of Latin America.
Humberto Brenes is also widely known for his track record in the Main Event of the WSOP tournament, which has put him on the second position on the most Main Event cashes list, falling behind Berry Johnston only.
One of his latest poker performances this year was in the WSOP $1,500 Buy-in Pot-Limit Omaha Hi-Lo Split-8 or Better in July. He ranked 91st and took home a prize estimated to $2,299.
